Sarajevo Airport Car Rental Guide

10 March 2026

Sarajevo International Airport (IATA: SJJ) is the main gateway into Bosnia & Herzegovina. Picking up a rental car here is one of the most convenient ways to start your trip β€” you're mobile from the moment you land.

Where to Pick Up Your Car

The car rental desks are located in the arrivals hall of the terminal, immediately after baggage claim. Collection is straightforward β€” present your booking confirmation, driving licence, and passport.

What to Expect at Pick-Up

1. Check the vehicle β€” walk around the car with the agent and note any existing damage on the condition report before signing

2. Fuel policy β€” confirm whether the car comes full (return full) or with a pre-purchase fuel option

3. Insurance β€” review what's included and what excess applies

4. Navigation β€” the airport is about 6 km southwest of the city centre; Google Maps works well throughout Bosnia

Tips for a Smooth Pick-Up

  • Book in advance β€” vehicle availability at the airport is limited, especially in summer (June–August)
  • Arrive with time β€” paperwork can take 15–20 minutes, factor this in after a long flight
  • Check your credit card β€” most rentals require a credit card (not debit) for the security deposit hold

Getting to the City Centre

From the airport, follow signs for Sarajevo Centar via the main road (M18). The drive takes about 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. There are no tolls on this route.

Returning the Car

The return area is clearly signposted at the airport. Allow at least 30 minutes before your flight for return and check-in. Most agents do a quick walkaround and release your deposit the same day.
